The 50/30/20 Rule: A Simple Budget That Works

The 50/30/20 Rule: A Simple Budget That Works

    What Is the 50/30/20 Rule?

The 50/30/20 rule is one of the most popular budgeting frameworks because it's dead simple. You take your after-tax (net) income and divide it into three categories:

    • 50% — Needs: Rent or mortgage, groceries, utilities, insurance, minimum debt payments, and transportation.
    • 30% — Wants: Dining out, entertainment, subscriptions, hobbies, and non-essential shopping.
    • 20% — Savings & Debt Payoff: Emergency fund contributions, extra debt payments, retirement investing, and other savings goals.

    Why It Works

Most budgets fail because they're too granular. Tracking every latte gets exhausting. The 50/30/20 rule works because it gives you guardrails without micromanaging every dollar.

If your needs eat up more than 50%, that's a signal — maybe your housing costs are too high relative to income, or you're carrying too much debt. If your savings are below 20%, you know exactly where to look for cuts.

    How to Apply It

Step 1: Find your monthly net income. This is your take-home pay after taxes and deductions. If you're paid bi-weekly, multiply your paycheck by 26 and divide by 12.

    Step 2: Calculate your targets.

    • Needs: Net income × 0.50
    • Wants: Net income × 0.30
    • Savings: Net income × 0.20

Step 3: Compare to reality. Add up your actual spending in each category. Where are you over? Where are you under?

Step 4: Adjust. The goal isn't perfection on day one — it's awareness. Shift spending gradually toward the 50/30/20 targets.

    When to Modify the Rule

The 50/30/20 split is a starting point. If you live in a high cost-of-living area, your needs might be 60%. If you're aggressively paying down debt, you might go 50/20/30 (flipping wants and savings). The point is intentionality.
